(the companion sonnet to “The Gathering Storm”)
Before the sun’s first light I wake and rise.
I am the one whose voice does not amuse.
In wilderness of glitter and fake news
I fight my way through swirling packs of lies.
The snarling jackals bare their teeth and grin.
Dark, glittering eyes take aim: My life they seek!
With trembling lips I draw my sword and speak
the Word that cuts through evil, death, and sin.
As morning breaks the chokehold of the night,
they melt into the shadows, one by one.
They cannot bear the brilliance of the Son
Who comes to bring the truth that gives us light.
In deepest darkness, Christ is born today:
God’s glimmering gift of love to light our way!
